4 Paths - The Start
In 2015 I put a proposal together for the
biennial exhibition 10 Days, that year the subtitle was chalk a medium
I was working with in the form of chalk gesso. My proposal was accepted, and
the project came to life.
Proposal
5 Chalk Walks (In the end I only
designed 4 walks)
South Downs Way
Monarchs Way - I changed this to The
Battle of Cheriton
Itchen Way
Wayfarers Way
The village of Cheriton is intersected by five ancient trails each
with
its own specific story. I will design 5 walks that include
extracts of these trails for 5 participatory walks during the 10 Days art
event. Meeting people on the village green in Cheriton; the walks will be
mapped in advance and include a historical overview and an opportunity for
participants to document the experience (all information will be made available
prior to the walks)
My work since 2012 has had an underlying focus about chalk and
began when I made work for an exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery called
Landscape Art & Uncertainly. The proviso being that the work responded to
artists in the collection from the Neo Romantic Period. I chose Ivon Hitchens
as he too lived on the South Downs. To contextualise my work I made my
paintings onto chalk gesso referencing the chalk substrata of the South Downs.
In advance of this new work I will research the story behind each
ancient trail and make preparatory work in response to both the story and
trail; through drawings, painting and film. I would like to show my exploratory
work in my studio in Cheriton during the 10 Days event and a painting from the
Southampton City Gallery exhibition in Winchester. I will make a pilgrimage
from Cheriton to Winchester to see my painting and create my own trail (I didn’t do this).
